SFR #191 – Neil deGrasse Tyson
In this special Monday interview, Bobby left work early and Korbus blew off work altogether in order to have a chance to interview Neil deGrasse Tyson. Aside from broadcasting it live, we also recorded it to broadcast “live on tape” at our regularly scheduled Sunday show time. In our first hour free talk segment Sunday, we discussed a few topics and stories from the news that have gotten people on all sides riled up. For instance, a child in Colorado was suspended for, of all things, sexual harassment, when he sang the lyrics to a song. We also touched on Dan Savage’s recent talk about those that use the Bible to support their anti-gay bullying and the subsequent walkout and uproar it caused – as well as Sam Harris’ blog defending ethnic profiling against Muslims at airports. Controversial topics, indeed.

Then, we welcomed Neil deGrasse Tyson. We talked to him about as much as we could in the 45 allotted minutes and covered a fair amount of ground, too. Of course, we asked about his newest book, “Space Chronicles,” and about the future of NASA and American space travel and exploration. We discussed how important it is to have great science communicators in the United States. But how do we cultivate interest in science and respect for NASA in a time when other countries are surpassing the United States for world supremacy? We also delved into his involvement in the new COSMOS series for FOX Broadcasting in 2013 and even had him say a few words about his favorite scientist, Sir Isaac Newton. Very fun and informative discussion! Highly recommended!!
