We are back and fresh off one of the most unintentionally controversial episodes we’ve ever done. Last week, skeptics and psychic proponents alike weren’t quite sure how to feel about mentalist Mark Edward. Is he a positive skeptical activist or someone who only claims skepticism when it suits him? We’ve weighed everything over the past week and give our opinion on the controversy. Also: we cover the sad story of a ghost hunter’s death, the recent passing of UFO satirist James Moseley, the dubious claims of the Ketchum Bigfoot DNA and how Bill O’Reilly recently decided “Christianity is not a religion.”
Next, we were pleased to welcome Robert Sheaffer, the dean of UFO skeptics, to the show. Sheaffer is a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and contributes regularly to Skeptical Inquirer Magazine as well as penning the regular column “Psychic Vibrations.” We talked to him about famous UFO sightings and how they have been explained through good scientific and skeptical methods. Also, we got into eyewitness testimony and how, particularly when it comes from someone deemed an authority (pilot, police officer, etc), it is given more weight in some people’s minds. Sheaffer doesn’t mince words when he attacks the poor logic and reason of the proponents of extraterrestrial visitation in this humorous discussion.
