–We think it is important to reconsider your beliefs, particularly your most closely held beliefs, from time to time. To that end, we are looking at a few newsworthy stories, and attempting to challenge our preconceptions. Some of the questions we ask ourselves and each other may be silly, and others may even be uncomfortable, but they are all intended to help us reflect on what we believe and why.
–Jamie Gilt, a 2nd Amendment advocate who fetishized guns, spoke about them as “toys,” and joked about how good of a shot her child was, is shot in the back by that 4yo child when she apparently left her gun unsecured. Should she be prosecuted, or is being shot punishment enough?
–The parents of a child who died of meningitis have pled not guilty to charges that they failed to provide the necessities of life when they tried curing his illness with olive leaf extract and maple syrup. It’s a sad story when anti-science views lead to anyone’s death, particularly a child’s. That said, should these parents face jail time? Or is the loss of their son adequate to make them change their ways?
–Psychics and mediums are often said to provide hope and comfort to those who have lost loved ones. If we acknowledge that point, should skeptics leave these psychic mediums alone? Should we give a pass to the families that seek their guidance as well? Where do we draw the line between good skepticism and just being an asshole?
