SFR 484: All Killer, No Filler

–Strange Frequencies Radio is back with a show entirely about true crime and serial killers. Jason is so excited.
–Why got us interested in true crime, and why does society seem to have a fascination with serial killers?
–Bobby heard about Adam Walsh as a youngster, and has since passed the fear on to his own kids. Jason says stranger abductions are rare, but asks if having a “spook story” to keep your kids in line outweighs the lie that there is danger at every turn?
–Beloved SFR listener Bryce asks what makes killers acceptable to be interested in, particularly when some are much more vile than others.
–Bobby is reminded of the German cannibal killer Armin Meiwes, who put out a personal ad in search of a victim, and found himself a willing participant.
Silence-of-The-Lambs–Always intriguing listener Mr. Chicago asks who the first serial killer was. While Jason thinks it is tough to know for sure, we do talk a bit about the first to obtain a large level of attention.
–Our former producer Egon wants us to talk about Lake and Ng. Jason gives a bit of their backstory, as well as a creepy chant that Ng was fond of, in case you need nightmare fuel.
–Passionate SFR listener Michael asks us to discuss modern serial killers, and we touch on a few that have captured a bit of the public’s imagination, including the possibility of one in Chicago.
–The Midnight Man himself, Tony Werewolf, asks us to talk about unsolved Delphi murders of young friends, Abby Williams and Libby German. While Bobby is frustrated at the lack of info released by authorities, Jason talks about the need to preserve the integrity of an investigation even if it irritates true crime nerds. However, there are two interesting pieces of evidence, brought to the public’s knowledge because of the girls themselves. We run quickly through a few of the major suspects.
–The Real and True O’Reilly, SFR Listener Chris, asks for our perspective on the Rhoden family massacre, where 8 members of the same family were executed in their home. The suspects arrested are all members of a family the police believe were involved in a child custody dispute with.
–We finally touch on the Mosque attacks from a few weeks ago, not so much to recap the crime itself, but to talk about how it was streamed live on the internet. Bobby makes the point that while serial killers aren’t breaking out into stardom the way that the classics did, the new wave of mass killers and spree killers are taking advantage of technology to increase their notoriety.
–Finally, at the instance of film buff AJ, we talk about our favorite serial killer movies, be they fictionalized or not. He brings up “10 To Midnight,” a Charles Bronson flick Jason now definitely wants to check out. We toss out modern day classics like Silence of the Lambs, American Psycho, and Zodiac. Jason recommends a slightly more obscure Boris Karloff flick called “Targets” that he thinks folks may enjoy.
–That’s all, folks! We hope we kept you interested and entertained. See you next time!
